Best time to visit Xinjiang and Duku road planning

Choose your region before your travel month: a city-and-oasis itinerary and a mountain-road trip need different plans. For grasslands and mountain lakes, ask about the condition of each road and the scenery you expect on your dates. Leave an extra night between a long mountain drive and an important flight.

What to check before booking

Duku is seasonal, not a year-round shortcut. The Xinjiang transport department reports its 2026 winter closure began on 8 October. Its usual mid-June to early-October window is not a promise for next year or for a specific day. Ask for the alternative road and overnight town before paying.

Pack layers: a wind-resistant outer layer, something warm for lake stops, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a small day bag. In Turpan, put exposed outdoor visits into the cooler part of the day where possible. Check the actual forecast shortly before departure.
